Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is characterized as the procedure followed by colleges and universities, employers, training institutes, career development practitioners, and other organizations to recognize and evaluate skills and knowledge gained outside the classroom vicinity. RPL is practiced due to many reasons; to trade qualifications, recruiting oneself in a program, etc. As an active participant in RPL’s process, you apply for qualification, degree, and certificates, which need not be based on academic records or attendance in school, but on the experiences and a unique set of skills acquired in the field. 

You must be wondering, how can qualifications or job opportunities be promised on the grounds of experience and competence, without any prior education relating to it? Let’s see what the different RPL qualifications are, and how all of this works. 

Categories of RPL qualifications 

There is a wide range of skill sets associated with Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), to help in assessing your skills and building a successful career. These skills are categorized into the following; Building and Construction, Business and Finance, Civil Construction, Commercial Cookery and Hospitality, Community Services, Engineering, Events and Entertainment, Hair and Beauty, Fitness and Recreation, Information Technology, Health and Massage, Meat Processing, Retail, Transport and Logistics, and many more.  

However, we will be looking specifically at one of the certification courses of Building and Construction, named Certificate III in Carpentry

Are you an experienced construction and building worker? Do you have vast experience in carpentry but not the required qualification to get a carpenter contractor’s license? Are you an enthusiast about your work and want to settle overseas with the same occupation? If yes, then read ahead. We are going to be discussing the training course that will help you get your carpentry license, in a way making your dream come true. 

The RPL assessment program for the Certificate III in carpentry is designed for people, who are working in construction sites or within the building industry as labours or carpenters, and wishes to be assessed on the basis of their years of vast experience and skills. This program is open to local carpenters with an impressive portfolio of years of experience, and local students with mediocre qualifications.  

Eligibility and Procedure 

Prior to the assessment an interview is held, where one of the assessors discuss with you your experiences in the building industry, which includes the types of projects you were assigned to work on and your role in each of them. Later you will be asked to complete a self-assessment guide, the results representing how compatible your current experiences are with the qualification. Following this, you will be contacted by your assessor to brief you on the evidence requirements, how the evidence will be submitted, and how the assessment will be carried out. 

The evidence that you will be asked to present includes; a letter of employment, resume, CV, apprenticeship papers, photos and/or videos of your workplace, recommendation and reference letters by the licensed tradesmen you signed contracts with, current agreements of employment, safe work method statements, job safety analysis, followed by many other formal and legal documents.  

The assessment that will be held after the evidence submission will consist of visits to your workplace and industries. You will be engaged in a competency conversation with your assessor, where you will be discussing the different fields and aspects of each level of competency; meanwhile, your assessor will be making observations and analysis to identify your present status on underpinning knowledge. The assessor intends to gather evidence on your ability and experience in the practical regard of every unit of competency, to strengthen your portfolio. 


RPL tends to be a fundamental and straightforward process where someone’s skill or knowledge is assessed, rather than judging someone’s competence solely on the basis of qualifications or credentials they might have achieved. It does not consider where the person has been working throughout the span of their work profile, their race or social status, their age, gender, or any other physical attributes. Simply, what RPL does is allowing the participants to show their eligibility and capability of undertaking specific tasks or working in a particular industry through their evidence of skill, knowledge, and experience.
